The Elmvale & District Food Bank has officially opened its doors to clients at its new location.
A small, physically distanced ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the new facility located at 62 Yonge Street North on Wednesday.
The food bank was previously located at the Elmvale Community Hall, where it suffered from food storage issues, privacy concerns and accessibility barriers.
The new facility is located within close proximity to the Simcoe County LINX Transit system, has ample parking, a private interview room and plenty of storage space.
In the first 10 months of 2020, the Food Bank has seen a 35% increase in usage when compared to 2019.
“We are thrilled to have a permanent space where we can provide services to our clients,” says Debra McLean, Director of the Elmvale & District Food Bank. “Our new space is bright, organized and spacious and it provides dignity for our clients through the use of a confidential interview space.”
“The Township is pleased to support the important work the Food Bank does in our municipality,” says Mayor Don Allen, Springwater Township. “The volunteers at the Food Bank work tirelessly to ensure no one in our community goes hungry. This new building provides them with the space to serve their clients more effectively. This year has shown that anyone can suffer from food insecurity, and the Food Bank is there to provide people with a helping hand when they need it most.”
The Elmvale & District Food Bank operates Wednesdays from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Emergency service is available by calling 705-322-9096.
