Ontario is getting a lot of money for public transit.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne were in Barrie on Tuesday for a joint announcement on transit infrastructure funding.
Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman, Barrie MPP Ann Hoggarth, Barrie-Innisfil MP John Brassard, and Barrie-Oro-Springwater MP Alex Nuttall were also at the Barrie Transit garage for the announcement.
Trudeau says his government has been negotiating with the province to help with 168 projects.
He says the federal government along with provincial and municipal partners will invest up to $3 Billion to help with public transit in Ontario.
Five cities will be getting a total of $688 Million that will cover 50 percent of the cost of the project, Barrie will share $30.6 Million with Waterloo and Sudbury.
The bulk of the funding — $500 Million — will go to Toronto.
Wynne says the funding will mean all day GO train service between Barrie and Toronto will be coming soon.
She says people are really excited that there will soon be electric trains traveling all hours of day.
There was no mention about whether if any of the money will go to communities like Orillia, Owen Sound, and Collingwood.
Wynne says the gas tax funding is specifically for transit in smaller communities.
She says Orillia is an example where they can have access to that funding.
Wynne says her government is negotiating another round of infrastructure funding.
She says she has heard many communities are looking for money to help with things like water and wastewater systems.
That funding announcement is expected to come in September.
