A full autopsy of George Floyd, the man who died after being restrained by Minneapolis police just over a week ago, has been released.
It provides several clinical details, including that Floyd had previously tested positive for COVID-19, even thought it did not contribute to his death in any way.
The 20-page report released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office yesterday came with the family’s permission and after a coroner’s report on Monday determined Floyd died from heart failure, due to asphyxia.
Bystander video showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pressing his knee on Floyd’s neck, ignoring the man’s pleas for air until he died, has sparked nationwide protests, some violent.
Prosecutors have filed a tougher charge against the police officer at the center of the case.
Chauvin is now charged with second-degree murder, while the other three officers have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Meanwhile, the George Floyd Memorial Fund has grown to over 12-million dollars.
The GoFund Me account was sent up by George’s brother and was established to cover funeral and burial expenses, mental and grief counseling, lodging and travel for all court proceedings, and to assist the family in the days to come as it continues to seek justice for George.
It says a portion of these funds will also go to the Estate of George Floyd for the benefit and care of his children and their educational fund.
In a worldwide show of solidarity, over 300K donors from 125 different countries have come together to support George Floyd's family, his children's future, and their fight for justice. https://t.co/1Jh0vCD9z1
